Tips for toddlers and preschoolers

From 1 year of age up until kindergarten, young children should get at least 180 minutes (3 hours) of activity spread out over the day.  Sounds like a lot, but many toddlers and preschoolers are constantly on the go – and it adds up!

Although you may not need to do much to encourage activity, you will need to set up your home so that it's safe to explore and run around, supervise them when they are outside, and limit the amount of time they are sitting in front of a television, computer or game console.

For children under 2, the recommendation is no screen time.  That's right!  Kids get much more benefit from interacting with people, playing with toys and being active than they get from even the most highly praised educational video or TV show.  And for kids 2-4 years old, limit screen time to no more than 1 hour per day.
