Smoke-free living

Children breathe in smoke when the adults around them are smoking.  Breathing in second-hand smoke has the same effect on children as smoking has on adults.  Children have smaller lungs and breathe more quickly than adults.  This means that they take in more of the harmful chemicals found in smoke than adults.

Children exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to

  • Wheeze,  cough and have breathing problems
  • Develop respiratory infections like bronchitis, asthma, and ear infections
  • Become smokers themselves when they grow up

Smoking in the home has also been linked to SIDS – Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

The best way to protect your children from second-hand smoke is to make your home, and your car, smoke-free.  If you smoke, go outside to light up, and ask friends and relatives who smoke to do the same when they come to visit.
