Nature deficit disorder

Dall Sheep photoAnimals kept in zoos and deprived of contact with nature start behaving very strangely – they pace, fight, stop playing, have trouble reproducing and when their efforts produce offspring, the parent-offspring relationship may be impaired.

While the behavior of humans deprived of contact with nature is not so extreme, “concrete jungles” may promote anti-social behavior and reduce opportunities for pro-social behavior. That is, more violence and property crimes, and less good will and social ties among neighbours. This effect is over-and-above any other factor that might contribute to social breakdown, like poverty or drug and alcohol use.
