Healthy living builds brains

This is really about getting back to basics – eating well, being active and getting enough sleep is important for people of all ages, including babies.

When it comes to infants, breast is best.  Yukon mothers are more likely to breastfeed their babies, and to exclusively breastfeed for the first six months than other Canadian mothers.  Breastfeeding is nutritious, easy for mothers , and protects infants against overeating, infection, and allergies.  It is recommended that mothers breastfeed their children until they are 2 years of age, or older.

Some foods – cereals and pureed fruits and vegetables – can be introduced at 6 months of age.  Babies like variety and they let us know when they are full.   Teaching healthy eating begins by learning and listening to a baby's cues that they are hungry or full.  A good rule of thumb for children of all ages is that parents are responsible for what, when and where kids eat, and children are responsible for whether they eat and how much. Being active is as important for babies and toddlers as it is for older children and adults.  Opportunities to be active build strong bones and muscles needed to explore their environment.  Starting with time on their tummy, babies learn how to lift their heads, and use their legs.  Before you know it, they will be rolling over, sitting and standing up, and taking their first steps.  There’s no stopping them then!

But don't let your baby have all the fun – join in.  Walk, run, jump, throw and chase balls.  This helps your child build their motor skills, and gives you a chance to be active and a good role model too.

Don't feel you need to stay indoors.  Nature is filled with interesting sights, sounds and smells and combined with physical activity, it's a great environment to build young brains.
