Buying big: Saving money or eating more?

It is very tempting to buy large “family sized” packages of food to save money. But it turns out that larger packages fool us into eating larger portions. So although we may save money when we buy big, we may “eat away our savings” by eating more.

How can we make buying bulk work for us?

  • Re-package foods like chips and cookies into individual portion size.
  • If you have room in your home or apartment, store the big packages someplace other than in the kitchen – out of sight, out of mind, out of stomach.
  • Refill smaller “normal” size packages for use in the kitchen.
  • Split the big box with a family member or friend – you both come out ahead.

Adopting one or more of these tricks can help you save money –and eat better.
